Radial Synapses

2005 First Night Binghamton H: 6ft × W: 10ft 4 minutes loop

A groundbreaking installation exploring neural pathways through animated neon choreography. The piece simulates synaptic firing patterns with precisely timed sequences of light, creating a mesmerizing visualization of biological processes.

Concept & Vision

Radial Synapses emerged from a deep fascination with how information travels through our nervous system. The installation translates the abstract concept of neural transmission into a tangible, visual experience—each burst of light representing the electrical impulses that define human consciousness and perception.

The piece invites viewers to contemplate their own biological machinery while experiencing the beauty inherent in these natural processes. It's both a scientific exploration and an artistic meditation on what makes us human.

Technical Approach

The installation employs a custom-built control system that coordinates 847 individual neon tubes across the sprawling structure. Each tube is independently addressable, allowing for complex choreographies that mimic the parallel processing of biological neural networks.

The timing sequences were developed in collaboration with neuroscientists, ensuring that the light patterns accurately reflect real synaptic firing frequencies while maintaining artistic flow and visual impact.

Exhibition History

Radial Synapses debuted at First Night Binghamton 2005, drawing over 15,000 visitors across the New Year's Eve celebration. The piece was subsequently featured at the Museum of Luminous Phenomena in 2009, where it served as the centerpiece for their landmark exhibition on light in contemporary art.

The installation has since been acquired for several major collections and continues to travel to venues worldwide, introducing new audiences to the intersection of science, technology, and artistic expression.

Viewer Experience

Upon entering the gallery space, visitors are enveloped by the ambient hum of the electrical systems—a subtle reminder of the underlying technology powering the visual spectacle. As the choreography unfolds, patterns emerge and dissolve, creating a constantly shifting landscape of light.

The piece encourages prolonged viewing; patterns that seem random at first gradually reveal underlying structures, inviting viewers to find their own meanings within the luminous chaos. It's an installation that rewards patience and attentiveness.
