Mark is primarily known for his large-scale neon sculptures of 4 to 15 feet in size that explore human identity, inner knowledge, time dilation, motion, and interconnectedness.  He is a light artist working with abstract representations of human emotions, souls, and consciousness.  Mark believes art can improve the world by inspiring the inner development of all humans; this is his mission.

The large neon sculptures of floating luminous fingerprint souls or huddles of consciousness spirals explore the visual representation of the inner and outer lives of humans.  Such works are explored in the Evocations series and Interconnected series, respectively.

His current experimental work is focused on more subtle luminous effects with intense color interactions and captivating visual depth.  He combines neon and LED light with overlapping layers of colored glass sheets and colored epoxy layers to explore memories and emotions as the inner world of humans.   These new artworks are explored in the Rememberings series.  His process starts with oil and watercolor paintings to explore compositions, color harmony, and color interactions before improving the works in glass and epoxy.

His current work feels like floating luminous souls next to abstract illuminated spiritual memories that inspire the inner growth of humans.  His work has primarily been shown in the Northeast including New York City, Philadelphia, Maryland, and western NY.

He completed his PhD in Glass Science in 2012 with a dissertation on Viscous Sealants for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells.  He then worked 8 years with glass R&D at PPG Industries followed by Heraeus Precious Metals.  He was awarded his 1st patent for his applied and profitable research at PPG and contributed to profitable production of environmentally friendly TeO2 glass for silicon solar cells while at Heraeus.  His contributions earned both companies millions of dollars.  He does consulting for companies requiring data analysis, glass chemistry knowledge, and glass research assistance.  His future artwork will further synthesize science and art with self-formulated glass and glass-ceramic compositions for tailored optical, luminescent, and/or thermophysical properties.

Mark O. Naylor

Mark learned glass science at Alfred University where he could simultaneously study glass art, neon, and luminescence while completing materials science degrees.  He was taking industrial glass engineering with electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of materials classes while completing his senior show of large-scale neon artwork; it was intense!  He was awarded the Richard Kelly Grant for synthesizing science, art, and light by developing unique luminescent qualities of researched rare glass formulations.  He is the synthesis of art, science, music, healing, and spirituality.

Mark has taught neon classes at Pilchuck Glass School, The Toledo Museum of Art, Brooklyn Glass, and Urban Glass after a decade of experience helping artists learn neon techniques at Alfred University.

While he was always a spiritual being since his teenage years, Mark enhanced his spiritual endeavors after some near-death health scares during COVID times.  Life is short; focus on the essential.  He provides therapeutic massages, myofascial release, and healing touch modalities to clients at two different chiropractor offices with his small business Triple Point Myofascial Release LLC.  This offers time to remain focused on his artistic practice with spiritual and healing connections.  He loves to experience the healing properties of making art and while viewing art.

“Life is short; get spiritual and focus on the essential.”
