Evocations Statement:

The Evocations series explores identity.  These luminous neon sculptures collectively explore identity using a fingerprint silhouette, proposed neural pathways of memories, along with a suspended time-capture aspect to simultaneously utilize duration and change of the self.  The sculptures are suspended from above so the art floats in space providing a feel of one’s soul hovering in front of the viewer to reinforce and empower the sense of internal self that one wants to achieve.

We know ourselves due to memories, which are strengthened neural pathways in the brain.  Recent neuroscience explains memories are recalled as a sequence of neurons fired in pathways of unique shape for every specific memory.  Physically our fingerprints are our identity having unique shape and line qualities.  Some aspects of the self change with the flowing river of time, but others remain constant.

These sculptures are simultaneously:

  • Stream of consciousness
  • Neural firing sequence of a memory
  • Fingerprint
  • Floating soul
  • Flux vector of electromagnetic vibrations
  • Spiritual resonance
  • Topography of a memory
  • Integrations of discrete moments
  • Duration of change
  • Motion of stillness
  • Developmental pathway
  • Elevation of the inner world

Is it our trauma or the positive times in life that define what we remember ourselves as?  Which experiences are reinforced via neural pathways to continuously recall ourselves?  Can we affect these pathways to reinforce new pathways to declare a new sense of self?  What do these pathways look like?  Can we relieve ourselves of inhibiting trauma to expand to a new self?  Is the soul the unchanging aspect of self through all time?
